Memphit Fur Meet - Labor Day Weekend, 2012 - Memphis, TN

Looking forward to MFM 07

This will be my first time so I'm quite excited. Hoping to get my first fursuit as well. Anybody like to comment on their first time at MFM ? I'm curious as to what to expect.

my first MFM

This will be my first MFM but not my first fur con. I have some idea what to expect but each fur con is diffrant. This will be the forth con. The cons that I have been to are FC since 04, AC 04, and not to caring if I ever go back, and Califur a couple of times. I am planing to go to RMFC next year.

Yay for promotions!!!

My First MFM Was 2003 (I think)

I've been arond a while and I'd gotten really tired of the furry fandom.  The conventions I'd been to seemed to be more about one-upmanship than about getting together to enjoy a hobby.  I wasn't into getting drunk or loud room parties.

TygerCowboy invited me to MFM and told me to wait until the weekend before I gave up my hobby.  He said if I didn't enjoy myself he'd never bug me about furry again.  He also promised that my service dog would be welcome, something I'd had trouble with other places even though it's the law.

I had such a great time that I ended up being staff the next year and hve been staff ever since :)   I look forward to MFM every year and it's the only convention I attend now.

MFM lives up to its reputation of a pizza party gone berserk.  People are friendly, helpful, there's lots to do, there's down time for visiting, and there's time to get out and see the sights.  There's good food at the restaurant in the hotel and in places surrounding it and the con suite is well stocked.  No one goes hungry, I can tell you that!

They're extremely fursuit friendly, one of the best I've ever been to.

You'll have a great time.

MFM '07 is Furry Initiation for me

Almost all my friends are furries and most everyone that we meet turn out to be furries as well. I never really thought about, but recently realized that I like furries, too. I had planned to go to MFM '06, but didn't have the money at the time to come. This year, I can't wait to attend. All my friends and housemates are attending this year, and I am very excited. Some of my friends have attended MFM for a while now and have told me all kinds of stories about on-the-spot fundraisers for unfortunate emergencies, everyone being unbelievably warm and friendly, pixie sticks, a computer room trying to hold the hotel's bandwidth hostage (LOL), a Horse Brutality room, and pizza, Bawls, and eight more different flavors of fun all around. I've only been to one convention and I spent over half of it by myself, looking at merchandise to buy and wandering around looking for people to talk to and coming up empty. I am EXTREMELY excited about MFM. I haven't had a real vacation in two and a half years where I can just go and be myself and have fun with complete strangers.

I also am trying to develop my fursona, which in my case, is two characters. They have been a part of me for a very long time, before high school, and I never have really sat down and figured them out. With help of my friends and their reassurance, I am even more ready to seek out artists with greater talent than my own meek ones to aide me in bringing my furry to life.

OK, I've written enough. I hope to see everyone in about a month! TTYL! ^_^

first timers

You sound like my friend, Blackie. At least, your situation does :D

I was supposed to go for the first time last year, but my parents decided otherwise, so I have to wait until this year (since I'll be 18 this time). It will be my first convention, too.

Here's what I know about the con from my grandparents who went in my place. Everyone is quite nice. There's a hell of a lot of pixie sticks in giant tubes, the kind that take three days to finish x3 There's a lot of free stuff floating around and a lot of information (i.e. pamphlets) to be gathered. And it's all a lot of fun.
They mentioned a sign somewhere that said "party upstairs in our room!" and that when they got there, they found another note that said, "no one came for the party, so we left." They found that rather amusing.
This is all third-party information, but I'm trusting it to be very true. You, my friends, and I, are all going in this together for the first time!

See you there! I'll be the guy with a guitar across his back!

MFM is Great!

Welcome! and hurrahs for your first year attending!

My first MFM was also my first 'con in general, so I had -no- idea what to expect. Well, I had -some- idea, but nothing compared to actually attending. From my experiences, it really is a lot like a big family reunion that's at (most?) times rather off the wall full of friends one hasn't met yet, or didn't know they had. Long story short, I'm sure you'll be 'hooked' like i was after the first year attending!

how do you know

This is my first time looking into this hobby and it seems like a very tight  group and a lot of fun,but Ihave a question for you guys? How do you know if the other furry is a man or a woman? Im just curious on how all of this works?

You need to specify on

You need to specify on whether you mean the character is a man or woman, or whether the fursuiter is a man or woman, because there is no rule saying you cannot 'be' a female character as a guy or a male character as a woman. Since nothing is going to happen that would test this assumption... you'd have to be a hell of a determined groper to figure things out, and then you'd be thrown out on your ear ;)

If you want to ask the question of a character, ask them! Even if they're nonspeaking characters they might be quite able to act it out, either playing very femme or stomping about and striking superhero poses. Interactivity is fun.

For some fursuiters, pulling off a gender-swap character really convincingly is also fun, so learn to appreciate what's presented to you as the surface character. No matter how good a guesser you are, you may still be fooled. It's all in fun :)

That depends very much on

That depends very much on what you mean.

Most furries are just normal enough people who happen to have an appreciation for anthropomorphics. Telling whether they're a man or a woman is just like telling if anyone else is a man or a woman.

If you're talking about fursuiters (who usually make up about 10% of convention attendees, give or take), that's a little more difficult. Some people will include obvious gender cues, but even those can be misleading.

Basically, if you're asking about how to determine the gender of someone inside a fursuit, you can't. Anyone else...with your eyes.

My first MFM was 2001. Some

My first MFM was 2001. Some local furs had driven down to the con (I'm in Dallas), and they'd gotten into a wreck - mostly undamaged, but their car was totalled. They made it, but they had no way home...so we took up a collection and managed to get them all plane tickets home. I was instantly hooked - no other con I had attended would have even considered trying to do something like that.  Well, that and the fact that it was a lot less crowded, a lot more friendly, the staff took way better care of the attendees, there were a lot more interesting events...anyhow, you get the idea. MFM 4 lyfe. :D
