IMPORTANT!

The City of Memphis and Shelby County are requiring all dealers and artists selling at the convention to obtain a Transient Vendor License and Permit. As part of that, you’ll also be required to get a State of Tennessee tax ID and pay $150 to the city and county for the permit. 

If you do not have this permit and the tax ID, we will not be able to seat you in the artist alley. This is not something that can be done online, so it must be completed before you arrive at the convention.

So what is the artist alley?

The artist alley is a space that can be purchased on a daily basis in the dealers room where artists can come and sell their art.

What about taxes and fees?

With our move to Memphis last year, we were informed that all dealers and artists that would be selling at our convention would be required to obtain a  Transient Vendor License and Permit from the city and county. We were giving a one year exemption to this for last year, but were informed this year we would not be given an exemption. We tried to work with them to see if we could do anything to make this permit and the required fees not required for the artists to cover themselves, such as running a central cashier where the convention itself would collect payments and submit any taxes. However, they would not allow this.

The only exception to this is if you have a business permit with the city of Memphis.

Besides the permit from the city and county, you will also be required to submit sales tax to the state of Tennessee after the event. The sales tax rate is 9.75%

TLDR: All artists that wish to be seated in the artist alley must obtain a Tennessee state tax ID and the Transient Vendor License and Permit from the city and county before they can be seated. There is a $150 cost for the permit. This CAN NOT be submitted nor paid online and MUST be completed before the event. If you do not have proof of the sales tax ID and permit, you will not be seated.

So how’s it different from the dealer’s room?

There are a few differences between the dealer room space and the artist alley:

  1. The area uses a lottery system used to fill the space in the beginning of the morning so as not to force people to line up hours before the room opens. If there are fewer artists than table spots, no lottery will be needed. You must purchase your space at the beginning of every day; there is no reserving of space beforehand.
  2. The area is first come, first served. You must purchase your space at the beginning of every day, there is no reserving of space beforehand. Depending on demand, there may be a lottery system used to fill the space in the beginning of the morning so as not to force people to line up hours before the room opens.
  3. You may only purchase ½ a table space, approximately 3 feet of table length.
  4. There is no access to power nor wall space
  5. You are limited in what you can sell. Generally the rule is you can’t sell what you didn’t make. This doesn’t mean you can’t sell a CD of your work, it means that you can’t sell someone else’s work. Mephit Fur Meet prohibits the sale of AI generated artwork that includes or incorporates another person’s work.

Where is the alley located?

The alley will be located either inside or just outside the dealers room, depending upon available space in the dealers’ den.

What are the hours?

The hours are the same as the dealer’s room:

Friday: Noon – 6PM
Saturday: 10AM – 6PM
Sunday: 10AM – 5PM
